It has been my pleasure to serve Godfrey in a variety of capacities. I have served 3 years on the Planning and Zoning Commission as well as more than 3 years on the Special Project Sewer Committee. I was an appointed Trustee in 2003 - 2005 and in 2006. In 2007, I was elected to my current term.
I grew up in Centralia, Illinois, a small town about 70 miles east of Godfrey. I graduated from Centralia Township Junior College and then SIU-Carbondale. I continued my education at SIU-Edwardsville, completing a Masters and Specialists degree. I then enrolled at Saint Louis University to finish a PhD in education.
I became active in local government following my retirement from a lifelong career in education as both a principal and teacher. I retired after 25 years in the Ferguson-Florissant School district in Saint Louis County following ten years in Illinois, five of which were in the Alton school district as teacher and consultant. During my classroom teaching I often taugh Civics classes. I always encouraged my students to become as informed and involved in their government as possible. I have enjoyed learning about government and I decided to become actively involved through serving on local committees.
Along with my wife Lois we’ve lived in Godfrey for more than 40 years, raising two children, Amy and Sara. My wife continues to work part time for Evangelical United Church of Christ at the conference office in Highland, Illinois. Prior to that she worked for 25 years at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, and before kids, taught Home Economics at Alton High. The two of us are at the point of our lives where we can now enjoying grand-parenting.
I enjoy my work in the community, not only with the Village, but serving more than seven years as Ambassador with the Growth Association. In 2003, I was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. The Growth Association has enabled me to meet many of the great people that live and work in the area. I was a Jaycees then, after being declared an "Exhausted Rooster," I joined the Alton-Godfrey Kiwanis in which I continue to be active.
I am committed to working on behalf of Godfrey and its citizens. I have seen considerable progress and I want to see that continue. I believe Godfrey offers a great place to live and raise a family. I want to do my best to see Godfrey continue as a place in which we can all take great pride. I know the next decade will bring major change to the community and I will do my best to see that these changes and opportunities are positive for both business and the residents.
